Remembering Rizal (Narrative Essay)

Remembering Rizal

What is a hero? A hero is a person who will risk something for the sake of others and not expecting a reward. Heroes are the person we admire because of their bravery, achievements, act of kindness towards people, and being the model that inspire and motivates us in our lives. I know someone who stays as a hero. He was not famous before and he gave the Philippines independence by not using violence that can hurt people. His name is Jose Rizal. Many Filipinos, specially the old ones, have known his courage. But some kids today might not know the true story and sufferings of Rizal.

On the 18th day of January year 2013, we watched a play about the childhood of Jose. The play was entitled “Batang Rizal” which was held in Assumpta theater. We rode a jeepney because the venue was quite long from our school. We waited for about two hours before we watched it. While we’re waiting, I’m not totally bored because of my friends. They keep on distracting me and they’re always making me laugh. After the long time of waiting, we already went to the assumption theater. When we entered the theater, I saw the second floor. I was amazed with its construction, because it’s the only theater I saw that has a unique appearance. Before they start the play the students occupied the seats first.

The play started. It was really fun watching the characters act, specially the friends of Pepito, also the main character as Rizal. Even they’re just talking or saying something. It’s just so funny on how they say and react on it.  I’m just unsatisfied with their props because they didn’t even change the props in every scene. Some parts are also boring; they’re just singing and dancing so I fell asleep. But when the part that Jose came from the past where he left his slippers and shouted “tsinelas ko…! (My slipper…!) ” I really laughed there. It was my favorite part of the play. I was also touched in the scene where Jose was telling the story of his life back then to Pepito, who also told Jose that he would be shot and killed by the soldiers. He also told Jose that he must go back to the past so his story won’t change and he would still be a hero. I touched my heart because he keeps on asking Pepito why he should die. That couldn’t a person be a hero even if he didn’t die. But Pepito just answered him that it’s his destiny. After some scenes, the play ended and we already went home.

We had a great time watching the play. Not just because it was cold at the theater, it has funny scenes, or just to get away from school but because we learned some values from the story which we can be transferred in our lives. It’s also a good thing that there is still a play like this which tells the story of unique individuals in the past because some people do not quite know the stories about our history. This play reminds us that a hero is not always by means of using cruelty just to protect people but sacrificing yourself for the risk of others voluntarily. As long as you have done good things that is remarkable in the minds and touches the heart of the people you can be a hero.
